Painter of genre scenes and landscapes.

The son and pupil of Samuel Frey, he continued his studies in Basel, Paris, Munich, Rome and Naples. He visited Sicily, Spain and joined the archaeological expedition to Egypt led by R. Lepsius. Frey finally settled in Rome.
