Painter of historical compositions, genre scenes, portraits and animals; engraver.
Charles Verlat was a pupil of Gustave Wappers and Nicaise De Keyser at the Antwerp Academy.
He lived in Paris from 1850 till 1868, where he met Gustave Courbet. Between 1875 and 1877, he visited Egypt, Palestine and Syria.
He also painted historical compositions, genre scenes and portraits.
He was inspired by Courbet’s realism to paint satirical subjects. Verlat was appointed professor in 1877 and later on, in 1885, principal of the Antwerp Academy.
This painting has been exhibited at the exhibition “THE CIRCUS, WE ARE” at the Musée Félicien Rops in Namur, Belgium (May 13, 2021 till September 5, 2021).
