Gustave-Max Stevens was a pupil of Jean François Portaels in Brussels and of Cormon in Paris. He was the author of the book “L’Ecrou” (1906) and co-founder and president of the art circle “Le Sillon”.

Stevens began his career as a Pre-Raphaelite. He left in 1902 for Algeria and Tunisia where he worked after nature. His style became more personal and innovative.

As a portraitist he mainly painted ladies and children.

This work was exhibited in December 1902 at the Cercle artistique et littéraire.
