Alexis Van Hamme was a pupil of Nicaise de Keyser and Henri Leys. He exhibited in Antwerp and in Brussels.

Praise is given to the accuracy of his drawing and the balance of his compositions.

His painting “The Old Lace Maker” (1874) was shown at the Exhibition of Belgian Art, held in Brussels in 1880. In Brussels, in 1852, he exhibited his “Arrival of Archdukes Albert and Isabella in Brussels in 1599”, which Leopold I, the first King of the Belgians, purchased for his private collection.
