Ludwig Thiersch was a student of Heinrich von Hess, Jules Schnoor and Carl Schom. In 1852 he went with his father to Athens, returning in 1855. In 1856 he went to Vienna for a commission. He settled in Munich in 1857. He was a member of the Academy of Saint-Petersburg and in 1861 joined the Berlin Academy. His work was seen at the Munich Exhibition in 1858.

Thiersch painted the frescoes for the Greek Orthodox church in Vienna.
