Painter of portraits and historical scenes.

After leaving the Academy of his birth place, Gustave Vanaise frequented Jan Van Beers’ studio in Paris. In 1882 – 1883 he went on a study trip to Italy. In 1887, he undertook a similar trip to Spain. After this last date rapid and constant progress is evident.

Vanaise has left some very fine portraits together with some enormous decorative compositions in which the traditional vision of the Flemish School darkens to interpret new feelings.
