Cesare Dell’Acqua trained at the Venice Academy, which he joined at the age of 21. He devoted himself to historical subjects and portraits. One of his earliest pictures “Cimabue Meeting the Young Giotto” (1847) was noticed and bought by Archduke Johann of Austria. This was the turning point for the young artist’s reputation. He went to Paris and then to Brussels, where he stayed with one of his brothers. From this time on, Dell’Acqua enjoyed success with the historical pictures he sent to exhibitions in Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent, Liège, Paris and Rotterdam. He was also commissioned by Emperor Maximilian to execute a major decoration in the palace of Miramar (1858-1866).
Dell’Acqua also earned a place of distinction among watercolour painters.
