MEERTS Frantz

THE CALVARY

Oil on canvas: 86 x 137 cm / 33.8 x 53.9 ins
Signed lower right

Painter of genre scenes; watercolourist and draughtsman.

Frantz Meerts was a pupil at the Ghent Academy and of Jean François Portaels in Brussels. He was one of Belgium’s most distinguished 19th Century artists.

The restoration of the frescos at the church of Anderlecht will remain one of the greatest artistic curiosities of the country: it is, above all, a delicate and considerable work performed with admirable intelligence and unfailing vaillance.

The copies done by Meerts in Italy and Spain are excellent.
