Jan Stobbaerts was a pupil of Emmanuel Noterman at the Antwerp Academy. He was a friend of Henri De Braekeleer and exhibited as of 1857.

His works vibrate with colour and originality and are generally quite small. He was called ‘The Poet of the Stables’ as he preferred to paint cows. He settled in Brussels in 1886.
