THE PIER

Painter of genre scenes, flowers, landscapes, seascapes, farms, nudes, figures and portraits.

Ludovic Baues studied at the Fine Arts Academy of Liège. He gained a scholarship and went to live in Paris for some time, before travelling to Italy, where he became a teacher from 1889 to 1935. After travelling to Paris and Italy, the city of Liège gave him a studio in town and he became a teacher at the Fine Arts Academy (from 1889 to 1935). He exhibited at the official salons. In 1886, together with Cambresier, d’Hondt, Maréchal and Mataive, Baues founded the Salon des Cinq à l’Emulation and the Cercle des Beaux-Arts de Liège.

Baues’ works are full of atmosphere, serenity and poetry and are painted in a soft, delicate range of colours.

In 1982 a retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Galerie de la Ferme Hautregard near Verviers.

This particular painting is a preparatory study for his oil on canvas “L’estacade” (“The Pier”) (81 x 124 cms / 32.2 x 48.8 ins, signed lower left).
