Ernst Aschenbach was self-taught. He was the son of Johan Carl Christoph Aschenbach and Nikoline Rikke Aschenbach and the brother of Vilhelmine Aschenbach. He married Magdalena Marie Aschenbach and he was the father of Erling Merton and Nikoline Charlotte Margrethe Aschenbach.
