Eugène Verdyen was a pupil at the Brussels Academy (1860-1864) and one of the first pupils of Jean-François Portaels in his own private workshop. He travelled to Italy, North Africa (1874) and Turkey.
Verdyen had a passion for reality and was very close with the artists of the ‘Société libre des Beaux-Arts’, but he treasured his independance and never joined a group. He had a palette full of intense colours. He settled down in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode and became a local councillar. He was a professor at the Brussels Academy. He participated in the illustration of Lemonnier’s book “La Belgique”, published in 1888.
Verdyen is considered to be one of the forerunners of Belgian Impressionism.
