Frantz Melchers was a pupîl of the Brussels Academy. As an illustrator he worked a lot with chromolithographs.

Melchers led a nomadic life between 1891 and 1912 and was active in Brussels, London, Paris, Delft and Volendam. He then settled in Saint-Gilles and finally, in 1939, in Antwerp.

The interiors of Frantz Melchers can be compared to those of the Dutch genre painters of the Belle Epoque.
