Painter of portraits, genre scenes and landscapes.
Gennaro Befanio was a pupil of the painter of animals Giuseppe Palizzi. He was Italien from birth, but became a French citizen. He exhibited from 1904 on at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, where he obtained an honourable mention in 1909 and a silver medal in 1911. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in 1920
Befanio worked in the boid and shimmering colours appropriate to his subject matter, predominantly gypsies and dancers; his colour palette appears less appropriate in his Breton landscapes.
