Painter of battles, genre scenes, landscapes and seascapes. Orientalist.

Born in Athens on November 17, 1842 and died in Berlin in 1921. From his youth in Constantinopel onwards (1850-1857), he travelled a lot and painted colourful oriental scenes. Pupil of the painter at the Potsdam Court Gustave Wegner (1859-1860) and Oswald Achenbach in Düsseldorf. He made his debut in Berlin around 1866. He painted a great many landscapes in the course of his travels all over Europe, travelling solo or in the company of Prince Sayn-Wittgenstein. He sometimes collaborated with Marc Wolkhardt on battle scenes and with Simmler on genre scenes.
