Painter of impressionist and luminist landscapes, portraits and figures; etcher and lithographer.
Emile Claus started as a realist painter. He moved into French Impressionism from 1890 onwards and ended as a luminist painter.
He got his first drawing lessons at the Waregem Academy, then, with the help of Pierre Benoît, continued his studies at the Antwerp Academy. He worked in the workshop of Nicaise De Keyser for a while. He travelled to Spain, Morocco, Algeria and, in 1898, to Italy. He lived in Antwerp and then settled in Astene, by the River Lys. He had a studio in Paris, then moved to England during the First World War, living by the Thames in London from 1916 on.
His national and international reputation grew from 1882 onwards. Emile Claus is considered to be one of Belgium’s finest post-1890 painters.
