Johannes Hendrikus Egenberger was a pupil of his uncle Louis Henri de Fontenay and the Amsterdam Academy, under the direction of Jan Willem Pieneman (1840-1848).

He collaborated with Barend Wijnveld Jr. From 1857 on, he worked in Groningen, where he became principal of the Minerva Academy.

He taught, among others, Bunna Alberda van Ekenstein, Martinus van Andringa, Franciscus Hermanus Bach and Otto Eerelman.

From 1848 until 1888 he exhibited in Amsterdam, The Hague, Arnhem, Groningen and Haarlem.
