Charles Hermans was a pupil of Gallait and Navez.

He stayed in Italy from 1862 to 1867, after attending Gleyre’s workshop in Paris.

Charles Hermans is one of Belgium’s finest artists who is capable of raising a simple genre painting to the height of history painting.

All his paintings display, alongside their artistic qualities, an intellectual eloquence.
