Jean Joseph Léon was a pupil of André Dupuy at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. He also studied with Jean-Paul Laurens, Benjamin Constant and Gabriel Ferrier at the Académie Julian. He was a member of the Société des Artistes Français from 1897. He was awarded a third-class medal in 1896.
