Painter of historical subjects, street scenes and portraits.

Jean François Gose started at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts on April 7, 1848. He was a pupil of Horace Vernet and Belloc.

He showed portraits and historical scenes at the Paris Salon between 1852 and 1870. He received an honorary mention in 1861.

This particular painting is represented with an illustration in Gaillard, “Paris à la Belle Epoque; Au temps de Proust”, Etrepilly 2003, at page 115.
