Painter of romantic mountain landscapes and portraits; lithographer and engraver.
François-Xavier Roffiaen was a pupil of Ferdinand Marinus at the School of Arts in Namur and of François Bossuet and Wilhelm Kuhnen at the Brussels Academy. He worked in the studio of the landscape painter Wilhelm Kuhnen for some time. He visited Scotland, Austria and Germany. He specialised in meticulously painted mountain landscapes of the Alps and Scotland.
A naturalist and a painter, Roffiaen was also the founder of the Malacologic Society of Belgium (1863) and he became its chairman in 1881.
Roffiaen also engraved several portraits.
