Edouard Woutermaertens was a pupil of the Courtrai Academy under Louis Robbe, who became a close friend. Later on, he was influenced by the School of Troyon. His preferred subjects were sheep in the open air.

Woutermaertens achieved great succes with his work in France and Great Britain. He was a regular exhibitor in the Brussels and Paris Salons. He was held in high repute in Belgium and abroad.
