Auguste Joseph De Mersseman was a pupil of the Academy of Bruges and, from 1833 on, of also of the Brussels one.

In 1840 he settled down in Antwerp.

The Groeninghe Museum in Bruges has his “Old Lafy With Cats” of 1840 in its collection.
