Painter of seacapes, landscapes, figures, portraits and animals.
Joseph Schippers was the grandson of the painter and copyist Charles Schippers and a pupil of Pierre Van Haevermaet and Léon Brunin. At a very early age, he skipped school to go and paint at the Zoo. He was awarded a silver medal in Athens.
Schippers was a very talented and sensitive artist. Although he painted all genres, he was particularly known for his representations of monkeys playing human roles.
A remarkable interpreter of the Flemish School, he is one of those who understand that art cannot be improvised and that art can never betray nature.
