Ferdinand Willaert was a pupil of the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent under Canneel. He had a preference for painting convents and urban sites in the Flemish area. In 1901, he became honorary principal of the Academy of Termonde, where he succeeded Jaak Rosseels.

Calvaries, docks, small streets and convents are the subjects in which he specialized.
