Painter of genre scenes, biblical subjects and decorative panels.

Jean-Baptiste Huysmans studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of his birth-place from 1843 till 1849. He painted works at the town halls of Geel and Comines. He exhibited for the first time in Antwerp in 1850 with “Charles I” and “Odette”. He visited the whole of Europe and exhibited in Paris in 1859. Huysmans visited Palestine and painted several large religious compositions for the churches in Jerusalem. He also travelled to Greece, the Near Est, Egypt and Algeria from 1856 on.

He published the two following books: “Travels in Italy and in the Orient, 1856-1857: Notes and Impressions”, 2 Volumes, Antwerp 1857 and “Illustrated Travels in Spain and in Algeria, 1862: Notes and Impressions and at least 175 original sketches from life in pen and ink, on stone”, Brussels 1865.
