Painter of seascapes and rivers; draughtsman and lithographer.

After his time in the military, Jan Christianus Schotel went on to study under A. Meulemans and M. Schouman. He studied the multiple aspects of the sea with zeal and great assiduity. During his lifetime, his works were much sought after. Between 1837 and 1838 he travelled to Belgium and France. He was a member of Pictura in Dordrecht. He taught F.J. van den Blijk, C.L.W. Dreibholz and C.P. Schotel. He exhibited in Haarlem, Amsterdam, The Hague and Ghent.
