Painter of animals and landscapes.

Henry Schouten studied at the Brussels Academy (1876 – 1881). The influence of Verwee can be seen in his works. He had a preference for realistic landscapes, but specialised, from 1880 on, in representations of cattle, livestock, poultry and dogs. He developped an easy going style for his realistic and attractive paintings of animals, which were very much appreciated by a bourgeois clientèle. He exhibited with the Union des Arts in Brussels in 1882.

In 1943 the city of The Hague organised a retrospective exhibition. Works by Henry Schouten can be found in the sanatorium of the Ursulines in Brussels.
