Ernest van den Kerckhove was a pupil of Jean-François Portaels. He worked some time in Rome and received the Grand Prix of the Academy for “Socrates before the Court”.
In 1868 he returned to his homeland, passed some time in Paris in 1869 and again in Rome in 1871.
He took part in the triennial Salons of Ghent, Brussels and Antwerp.
