Signed and situated 'Roma' lower right
Painter of genre scenes, historical scenes, local scenes and romanticized scenes set in the Italian countryside; watercolourist. Orientalism.
Frederico Bartolini studied first at the Accademia di San Lucca, then at life painting classes between 1861 and 1865. He was active between 1861 and 1908. In 1881, together with other Italian artists, he was invited to participate in an exhibition organized in Brussels by Belgian watercolourists. Two years later, he participated in the Fine Arts Exhibition in Rome.
Bartolini’s scenes of North African life centre almost invariably on the Algerian town of Tlemcen, which, in all likelihood, he knew only from contemporary photographs.
Of particular note is the care he lavished on rendering architectural detail.
