Médard Tytgat Senior was the older brother of Edgard Tytgat. He was a pupil of Eugène Charles Legendre at the Academy of Bruges and of Jean-François Portaels (1890-1894) at the Academy of Brussels.

He took part at the Salons of Brussels, Liège and Ghent, but also at the one of the Indépendants in Paris. He was cofounder of the art society ‘Labeur’.
