THE MASTERS OF THE ZOUTE
Mixed technique on paper laid down on panel: 90 x 90 cm / 35.4 x 35.4 in
Signed and dated '1934' middle right
Painter of animals, landscapes, outdoor paintings with figures, interiors, portraits, still lifes and flowers; watercolourist.
Edgard Wiethase studied at the Academy of Antwerp under Charles Boom, Charles Mertens and Piet Verhaert and at the Higher Institute of Antwerp with Frans Van Leemputten.
Wiethase worked in the tradition of Flemish animal painters. He marked a predilection for foals, mares and stallions performing typical movements. He preferably worked on a background applied in advance, which helps to suggest the vibrations of the movements. The matte material sometimes recalls the technique of frescoes.
Wiethase had a realist style tending towards luminism. The blooming colors of his watercolors are remarkable.
