Barthélémy Lauvergne was a pupil of Pierre Letuaire. He took part in the Paris Salon from 1828 to 1849. In 1835 he won a third class medal. Meanwhile Lauvergne had become an administrative officer in the French navy, which gave him the opportunity to undertake several voyages around the world. During these travels he made drawings, some of which he later turned into oil paintings.
