Painter of genre scenes, portraits and mural compositions; draughtsman and sculptor.

Joseph Bernard studied under Lefebvre, Boulanger and Chapuis and at the Paris School of Fine Arts. He won the 1883 Crozatier Prize. From 1886 to 1892 he participated in the ‘Salon des Artistes Français’ in Paris. He became a teacher at the Communal School of Drawing and president of the Velay Fine Arts Society. He was appointed Knight of the Order of the Légion d’Honneur.
